A Blast to the Past

Established in 1758, Fort Bedford was an old military outpost during the French and Indian War. This war was a pivotal battle between the British and French forces on the North American continent.

Positioned among the banks of the Juniata River, the British Army named it after the Duke of Bedford in England, who was a prominent political power. The fort was constructed by Colonel Henry Bouquet under the orders of General John Forbes, which ensured protection amongst the British supply lines.

As time passed, the fort evolved. Although initially a stockade, it later became a central hub for operations and a main point during the settlement of the Bedford area. It served a military purpose in the American Revolution, but quickly fell abandoned by the 19th century.

Modern Day Revamp

A reconstruction of the original fort stands today for you and your party to experience. Visitors can explore the old wooden stockade, barracks, and any other structures pertinent to the military outpost.

Based on historical research and archaeological findings, the Fort Bedford Museum offers a very descriptive and authentic representation. Witness firsthand the lives of the soldiers in the blockades, and how it would’ve been during that time period.
