Not Your Average Historical Museum

Don’t get it twisted; Old Bedford Village is not a passive museum experience and visitors are delighted that history actually breathes here. The village is described as a living history museum. But, what does that mean?

The museum was originally established in the 1950s and was designed to recreate and preserve the rich history of early American life. As you wander through cobblestone streets, you’ll encounter a variety of historic buildings, all authentically furnished and staffed by knowledgeable reenactors.

The reenactor’s period-specific language, attire, and humble architecture are impeccably spot-on for portraying the late 1800s. We wouldn’t blame you if you felt like you had discovered a time machine and transported back in time; it’s that authentic!

Walking Through Time

There’s something enchanting about Little America, back when people didn’t have a computer in their pocket and times were modest and simple. A humble American in the late 18th-century valued simplicity, hard work, and self-reliance. The middle-lower class families lived modestly, adhering to a lifestyle that prioritized practical needs over luxury.

Families spent their time engaged in farming, artisan work, or other trades, and contributed to their local community with a strong sense of personal responsibility. Their sense of pride was tied to their contributions to their community rather than personal wealth or status.

These themes are reflected in Old Bedford’s authenticity and the way the actors share their story. Start your journey back in time as you walk through the village’s iconic stone archway. The buildings are arranged to represent what a small American town looked like in the late 18th century.

Historic Buildings: Visit the old tavern to experience colonial hospitality, or stop by the church to see traditional religious practices. The blacksmith shop showcases the essential skills of early American tradesmen, and the general store lets you see what goods were available to settlers at the time.

The schoolhouse showcases how children of this time were taught and what educational methods were used.

Costumed Interpreters: The staff at Old Bedford Village are more than just museum guides; they are living history interpreters. Dressed in period-appropriate attire, they engage with visitors, offering insights into daily life, customs, and crafts of the time. Don’t hesitate to ask questions—they’re a wealth of knowledge and eager to share.
