The Arcadia Theater in Windber, PA: History, Art & Magic

There’s something enchanting about watching live theater. Not only does it provide a glimpse of individual artistry, but live performances also create a sense of community. But, what happens when the crowds start to dwindle, digital shows become the norm, and families choose to spend their evenings indoors?

That's the unfortunate case for many nationwide theaters and cinemas that struggle to draw in the same crowds they did even 5 years ago. As time marches on, many will have to question where they’d rather spend their hard-earned dollars; large media corporations and streaming services or humble, community theaters.

Today we celebrate a theater in Windber, Pennsylvania that still showcases live performances and concerts. Let’s take a look at the storied past of the Arcadia Theater in Windber, Pennsylvania, and how it stands today.

Uncover the History of Arcadia Theater

The Arcadia Theater opened in 1921 and was built with donated funds by the stockholders of the Windber Theater Corporation. When the theater first opened it showcased many Vaudeville acts and cinema productions, before closing in 1977.

The beloved shows of the Vaudeville area featured light entertainment that consisted of unrelated acts like singers, dancers, magicians, acrobats, and comedians. After a period of closing/opening and tragic flooding, the Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation purchased the theater to restore it to its former glory.

The restoration began in 1990 and the goal was to use many of the old pictures and the memories of former guests/performers for both the interior and exterior designs. Finally, in 1998, the Arcadia reopened its doors with the production of “Best of Broadway.” Except for present-day technology, the Arcadia Theater retains much of its original charm and grandeur.

The Charm & Grandeur Within

We encourage everyone to go see the theater for themselves, and we hope our description will inspire you to begin planning your visit.
